The Stories Behind The Songs
Ever wondered where the songs really came from?
Have you ever been in an Irish pub when the music starts?
Not just the background music either. The real thing.
Someone lifts a fiddle, another picks up a guitar, a bodhrán starts beating softly in the corner and suddenly the whole room leans in. The first few notes ring out and before long the place is alive with singing. Strangers become friends, pints are raised, and there’s that moment…you know the one, when the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
Because when Irish folk music is played the way it’s meant to be played, it’s not just music.
It’s storytelling.
And every one of those songs has a story behind it.
Some of them are funny.
Some of them are heartbreaking.
Some of them are rebellious.
And some of them… well, some of them should probably come with a warning before the chorus kicks in.
That’s exactly what our new series Stories Behind the Songs is all about.
The man behind the music
The series is led by Ged Graham. The director and producer of Seven Drunken Nights and one of the familiar faces audiences have seen performing in the show for the past ten years.
After a decade on stage singing these songs night after night, Ged has come to know them inside and out. But more importantly, he’s come to know the stories behind them… the history, the legends, and the moments in time that gave these songs their meaning.
And like any good Irish storyteller, he’s sharing them the best way possible: by telling the tale through song.
A new story every Monday
In Stories Behind the Songs, Ged takes a closer look at the music we all know and love, uncovering the origins and stories that helped turn these folk songs into the timeless classics they are today.
But these episodes are more than just history lessons.
Each week, Ged shares the story behind a song where it came from, who it was about, and why it has stood the test of time. And then, just as the song would have been shared in a pub all those years ago, he sings a little of it too.
Hearing the story first changes everything. Suddenly the lyrics carry more meaning, a familiar line might make you smile in a different way, and the chorus you’ve sung a hundred times suddenly feels richer once you know the tale behind it.
It’s part storytelling, part music, and a little bit of exclusive insight into the songs that have shaped Irish folk tradition.
And with a brand new episode released every Monday, there’s always another story waiting to be told.
Songs that travelled through generations
One of the most remarkable things about Irish folk music is how these songs have survived.
Long before recordings, radio, or streaming playlists, these songs were passed down the old fashioned way, by people singing them. Around kitchen tables. In crowded pubs. On long journeys across oceans.
Sometimes the lyrics changed. Sometimes the melody shifted. But the story remained.
That’s why songs like The Irish Rover, Whiskey in the Jar, Dirty Old Town and Molly Malone still resonate today. They’re not just songs… they’re pieces of history carried through generations.
And yet many people know the chorus without ever hearing the full story behind it.
Until now.
Why the stories matter
Understanding the story behind a song can completely change the way you hear it.
A ballad becomes more than just a melody. A lyric suddenly means something deeper. A familiar chorus takes on a whole new life once you know where it came from and why it was written.
Irish folk music has always been about more than entertainment. It’s about memory, culture, and keeping stories alive.
That’s exactly what Seven Drunken Nights celebrates on stage every night and now Stories Behind the Songs gives audiences the chance to dive even deeper into the music they love.
Pull up a chair
So whether you’re a lifelong fan of Irish folk music or someone who simply enjoys a good song and a good story, this series is for you.
Because like any great Irish tale, the best stories are meant to be shared.
So pull up a chair, raise a glass, and join Ged Graham as he explores the Stories Behind the Songs… discovering the legends, the history, and the heart behind some of the greatest folk songs ever written.
And who knows… the next time you hear one of those familiar opening chords in a pub somewhere, you might just hear it a little differently.
In the best possible way.
